A Minimalist Heirloom Redesign

Our featured client had an antique family ring that held some sentimental value but that unfortunately was in pretty dismal shape after multiple poorly executed repairs done elsewhere. The ring - set with a nicely-sized natural diamond in the center and flanked by a pair of synthetic blue sapphires - was stylistically not her cup of tea. Combined with the poor state of the ring in general, these factors led our client to pursue other options for resetting the stones.

The synthetic sapphires were set in a pair of very simple studs (not pictured) that cost just a few hundred dollars, giving our client the satisfaction of repurposing some pretty stones without breaking the bank on a pair of earrings she won’t wear very often.

More excitedly, our client opted to reset the diamond in a beautifully minimalist bezel setting. We suggested our favorite prefab style which allows for versatility in how the chain lies: clients can orient the chain in different ways using the back openings that will allow the diamond to sit more horizontally or more “V” shaped on the chain, depending on personal preference. In 14k yellow gold and set with an adjustable simple cable chain, this understated beauty will shine for daily wear.

We love the idea of repurposing heirloom gemstones into new settings, and we particularly enjoy making a beautiful daily-wear option that will get plenty of use. Even better, we were able to keep the cost of the project down by utilizing a prefabricated setting instead of going through a full design process.
