Specialized Sourcing

Investing in the perfect gemstone for your custom piece is a tremendous decision, and we aim to help our clients achieve their own vision of perfection with their piece. For some clients, that might not only mean finding the perfect look, but also the perfect origin story for their gemstone. Because we offer a completely bespoke sourcing experience, we can provide our clients with a thoughtful, conscientiously sourced option that not only looks beautiful but feels right.

Our Specialized Sourcing model works for our clients because it allows us to customize their search to the exact specifications they desire. We especially aim to expand the available market of gemstones for clients who take transparency and ethical sourcing seriously. We provide the most conscientiously curated options in the market by working with gemstone vendors who focus on transparency though mine-to-market and collaborative relationships with mining cooperatives. These are vendors who hope to change the jewelry industry one gem at a time, and we’re proud to collaborate with them on our most thoughtful projects.

Diamond & Gemstone Sourcing

  • At Alx&Co., we do 100% of our diamond and gemstone sourcing on a completely customized basis. This means that we do not keep an inventory of diamonds or gemstones on hand; rather, we order directly from our trusted vendors based on each client’s individual goals.

We start by discussing your goals for your selection, your budget, and any sourcing considerations that you would like us to keep in mind. We then order a collection of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, or any other gemstone for you to review in-house with your Design lead. Your Design Lead will walk you through the grading of each gem and you’ll learn how to evaluate which one works best for your own specific goals.

Before we begin sourcing your gemstone, we secure a $300 deposit which is credited towards your final design balance.

  • Natural mined conventional diamonds

    Natural mined Canadian diamonds

Lab created diamonds (we prefer USA-made, carbon-neutral, non post-production treated diamonds, but we source other varieties as well)

    Recycled diamonds

    Antique & uniquely-shaped diamonds

    Salt & pepper diamonds

    Natural Montana sapphires

    Natural fine Ceylon sapphires

    Natural fine rubies & emeralds

    Other gemstones by request

  • We realize that not all clients benefit from an iterative process, so for those who prefer a more expedited sourcing option we offer house-selected round diamonds for both natural or lab-created options. We limit this option to round diamonds because truly - most round diamonds, if well selected, will appear very similar different designs. Our price point for our Expedited Diamond Sourcing option is on-par with what you would find in an online market.

  • With major names such as Brilliant Earth and Blue Nile offering convenient delivery options and seemingly easy online browsing options, it might feel like you can snag a deal by purchasing your diamond through a “direct to buyer” vendor. We do work with clients who source their diamonds this way, but we offer caution to those considering this route. Buying a diamond is a very subjective decision, and while you can do lots of research online to figure out which combination of grading is “right”, we feel quite strongly that seeing diamonds or gemstones in person and having the opportunity to compare like-to-like is the essential ingredient to selecting the option that is right for you. Often, we find that clients overbuy when sourcing online (i.e. buying a grade or two higher than they can actually distinguish), which drives up the cost of the diamond unnecessarily. We also find that clients who purchase diamonds through “direct to buyer” vendors don’t have a good grasp of their selection. They have never looked at it under a loupe, they don’t understand the cut characteristics, or they may not have understood treatment annotations about their piece.

We also find it extremely useful to work directly with your ring designer to source your feature gemstone, because your designer will be able to help you contextualize how your selection will work for your design goals. By keeping both the gemstone selection and the design element under one roof, you will ensure that your process is seamless, thoughtful, and tailored to your own preferences, from start to finish.

Finally, we gently encourage you to consider that small businesses like ours distinguish ourselves through impeccable service, creative design, and quality craftsmanship that we stand behind. Larger retailers simply do not have the same approach: theirs is a model of quantity over quality, and your selection is just another transaction in their books. If you are interested in keeping service-based companies such as our in business, you’ll want to consider that each purchase with Brilliant Earth or Blue Nile removes a potential source of revenue from small businesses like ours who employ skilled craftspeople right here in your neighborhood.

Specialized Sourcing: FAQs

Most jewelers keep an inventory of options. Why doesn’t Alx&Co.?

A common refrain from our clients is that they appreciate out educational and stress-free the Alx&Co. experience is, and our gemstone sourcing model reflects this ethos. We never want our clients to feel pressured into a gem that isn’t right for their project just because we have it in stock, so we keep a neutral sourcing model for every project. A benefit of our model is that we are flexible to work with many different loyal vendors who each specialize in slightly different gemstones and sourcing methods. We consider our role as jewelers to be one of education and connection: we learn what you are looking for in your gemstone, walk you through your sourcing options, and let you select the path and budget that works best for you.

Which sourcing methods do you endorse?

Honestly, we see benefits to nearly any path you take, as long as it feels right to you. We respect our conventional diamond vendors who have a wealth of experience and knowledge about the diamond industry and see we value in natural and lab created diamonds in different ways. We love working with our Canadian vendors for alternative-colored diamonds and we especially love the idea of recycled diamonds and antique diamonds, since the ecological impact of using recycled stones is nearly eliminated. Sapphires can come from a wide variety of locales, and depending on exactly what you want your sapphire to look like we can advise you on which sourcing options will be available to you.

Are there differences in how the sourcing will work depending on which origin model you pick?

Yes, there will be differences. Conventional diamond sourcing, whether you are looking for natural or lab created diamonds, can usually be completed within a week of your initial consultation. Most conventional-colored sapphires can also be sourced within this amount of time. Certain recycled and antique cut diamonds will take a little longer, as come vendors are international and customs can create delays. All of these options can be viewed in person on review, though, and usually ample variety is available.

Certain mine-to-market vendors will have more limited capacity in sending gems on demand and certain cuts and certain colors will be more difficult, but we try to make everything work as best as possible. Typically, if you want total transparency and a true mine-to-market type transaction, diamonds will not be an option for your piece. You’ll want to consider sapphires, garnet, or other colored gemstones for your stone and you will need to be open to unconventional cuts and colors for your gemstones. These vendors also have less flexibility to send gemstones on review since many of these gems reside in their mine co-ops until they are purchased, while our other vendors can easily send options on memo. Videos and pictures might need to be the guides in these cases, so clients will need to be open to that process.

Availability shifts nearly daily and we are constantly adapting to new broker options. We are happy to walk you through which route fits your own goals best, and we will explain which sourcing options will be available to you for your particular gemstone search. In the end, the sourcing method that feels the most right to you, is the most right for us.

What if you can’t find the perfect gem for me?

Every once in a while, we realize we aren’t the best fit for your search. We do require a Design Deposit before beginning a custom gemstone search and typically this is non-refundable if we have researched and ordered in gemstones for your review and you don’t end up selecting one of ours. If we realize that we can’t fulfil your search based on the parameters you provided to us, i.e., we are unable to meet your budget expectations or color specificity, then we will refund your deposit. If you simply don’t like any of the stones we have sourced or you changed your mind, then we will keep the deposit to pay for shipping fees incurred for your consultation. Hopefully we’ll be able to work on your design!
